Jerwood 10x8: Stairworks
Protein’s first site-specific piece, made for The Wapping Project in the former Hydraulic Power Station in Wapping, mixes news coverage of Britain’s mad cow disease crisis with Vivaldi’s music and images of young men wearing small bath towels. Taking place in front of a dinner crowd, the piece begins with John Milroy reading a news report about foot and mouth disease. Dressed as a chef and holding a slab of meat, Luca Silvestrini argues with another chef before being abducted through a doorway and into a stairwell by a cast of men - or a chorus of angels?
Commissioned as part of Jerwood10x8: Stairworks by the Women's Playhouse Trust for The Wapping Project, in association with the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
"This highly technical piece was humorous and very challenging...it was interesting to have limited sightlines and see only glimpses of the dancers. It gave the illusion that there were hundreds of them back there."
